SYMPOSIUM
Artists Christine Borland,
Gina Czarnecki and Gair
Dunlop presented their latest research at the International
Symposium Designer Bodies: Towards the Posthuman Condition, alongside eminent
psychologists, microbiologists, curators, writers and artists from New York,
Buffalo, Paris, London, Penzance and Dundee including Bergit
Arends, Alan Bleakley, Chris Byrne, Bronac Ferran, Jens Hauser, Steve Kurtz,
Warren Neidich and Keith
Skene. The International Symposium was held at the
Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art on 3 April 2004 and marked the beginning
of the science and art season.
Among
the questions posed were: How do we view today's alliances of science and
art? Do biomedical science and genetics have a similar creative impact on
contemporary art to that of anatomy during the Renaissance? What are the implications
for artists using DNA and genetically modified organisms as their media of
choice? Do works of art inspired by new scientific insights into genetics
explore the posthuman condition? Explore the links on this site for further
information, including visual and audio highlights from the Symposium presentations
by artists and scientists.
